This icon is hand-painted according to the ancient technique of encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting. It involves the use of heated beeswax, to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used.
Christ Pantocrator is a painted wood panel dating back to the 6th century from St. Catherine’s Monastery located in Sinai, Egypt. This painting is considered one of the oldest Byzantine religious icons and is the earliest known work of the Pantocrator style. The painted panel stands at 84 cm in height with a width of 45.5 cm and a depth of 1.2 cm. The painting is believed to have been larger originally.
Christ is raising his left hand to signify a blessing, and with his right hand, he holds onto a book. The painting is deliberately asymmetrical. It is a symbol of Christ’s dual nature. Christ’s left side is symbolic of his human nature, with his features depicted as much softer and lighter. Christ’s right side is symbolic of his divinity with his stern look and intense features. The eyes themselves are different in shape and size, and the hair on his left side falls behind his shoulder.
I made this icon to order. It was really exciting for me to use the old technique. The size is 85 х 45 х 3 см, which is approx. 33.46 x 17.71 x 1.18 inches. I use only clear beeswax and natural pigments; the panel is made of natural wood, specially crafted by my carpenter; it is covered with canvas to make it strong.
