The Original Sinai Icon

The original Christ Pantocrator of Sinai, preserved at Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Egypt, is one of the oldest surviving Byzantine icons, dating from the sixth century. Thanks to the monastery’s dry desert climate, this remarkable work has survived for more than fourteen centuries.

It is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of Christian sacred art and among the earliest known depictions of Christ Pantocrator.

I chose to recreate this icon because of its profound theological symbolism and its unique place in the history of Byzantine iconography. More than fourteen centuries after its creation, it continues to inspire iconographers throughout the Orthodox world.

The Encaustic Technique

Unlike the more familiar egg tempera technique, this icon is painted using the ancient encaustic (hot wax) method, in which purified beeswax and natural mineral pigments are applied while warm.

Preparing an encaustic icon requires patience, precision, and constant attention, as the wax must remain at the proper temperature throughout the painting process. Each layer is carefully applied by hand, making every icon entirely unique.

Today, relatively few iconographers continue to work in the traditional encaustic technique because of the specialized knowledge and careful craftsmanship it requires.

For me, preserving this historic method is both a privilege and a responsibility.

Symbolism

One of the most remarkable features of the original icon is the subtle asymmetry of Christ’s face. This intentional difference symbolizes His two natures—fully human and fully divine—one of the deepest theological truths expressed in Byzantine iconography.
